We are seeking an experienced Tooling Estimator with a strong background in precision engineering and manufacturing to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for tooling projects, including the design, manufacture, refurbishment, and modification of high-precision tooling. This role requires a detailed understanding of machining processes, materials, CAD/CAM, and industry standards, as well as the ability to liaise with clients and internal teams to deliver cost-effective solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Cost Estimation & Quotation
- Prepare detailed cost estimates for tooling manufacture, refurbishment, and modification projects.
- Analyse technical drawings, CAD data, and client specifications to determine accurate time, material, and labour requirements.
- Produce formal quotations, ensuring commercial competitiveness and profitability.
- Technical & Project Analysis
- Review customer requirements and provide technical input to ensure feasibility.
- Collaborate with design, engineering, and production teams to validate estimates.
- Identify cost-saving opportunities in processes, materials, or tooling approaches.
- Customer & Supplier Liaison
- Communicate with clients to clarify requirements and manage expectations.
- Source and evaluate supplier costs for materials, subcontract services, and specialist processes.
- Build strong working relationships with customers and suppliers to support project success.
- Business Support
- Support the sales team with technical expertise during proposal stages.
- Maintain accurate records of estimates and quotation history.
- Contribute to continuous improvement in estimating systems and methods.
Key Skills & Experience
- Strong background in precision engineering / tooling manufacture (e.g., press tools, mould tools, jigs, fixtures, or similar).
- Knowledge of machining processes (milling, turning, grinding, EDM, etc.).
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and CAD models.
- Proficiency with estimating software, ERP systems, and Microsoft Office.
- Strong numerical and analytical skills, with attention to detail.
- Commercial awareness and ability to balance competitiveness with profitability.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for dealing with clients, suppliers, and internal teams.
Qualifications
- HNC/HND or equivalent in Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineering (desirable but not essential with relevant experience).
- Proven experience in an estimator role within tooling, precision engineering, or related manufacturing environments.
